Anyone who is a currently enrolled student at Texas State is eligible. Enrollment is verified prior to setting an appointment to see a lawyer.

You can receive legal advice concerning:

• Landlord/Tenant Law: apartment leases, rental property, and tenant rights
• Criminal Law: any legal matter that could result in criminal charges
• Family Law: marriage, divorce, and child custody and support
• Contract Law: contractual obligations
• Employment Law: employee rights and responsibilities
• Consumer Protection Law: service or repair performance
• Notary Public Service: notarized acknowledgment of signatures

The attorneys at the Office of the Attorney for Students will assist you in informal resolutions or disputes through fact-finding, negotiation, or mediation. Their heavy caseloads prevents them from representing you in court or from drafting lengthy legal documents. When your case cannot be handled by this office, you will be referred to local attorneys for further, more direct legal representation.

The services provided by the Office of the Attorney for Students are free. Your student services fee is used to help fund this office. Thus, if you are a registered student, you are entitled to the services provided by this office.

The attorney/client privilege applies to the relationship between the Office of the Attorney for Students and the students. All information discussed in this office is held in strict confidence. For this reason, no legal advice will be given over the telephone or by e-mail, since we cannot be certain with whom we are speaking or corresponding.  

If you need legal assistance, contact our office to make an appointment either by calling (512) 245-2307 or by coming to our office. You will be scheduled for the first availabe appointment that is convenient for you.

Bring any pertinent documents you have. For example, you will need to bring your lease when discussing any aspect of your tenancy. If you have received a ticket, bring it, or if you have been in an automobile accident, bring a copy of the police report and the repair estimates. Also, it helps to write down a summary of your legal problem and any particular questions you have before coming to your appointment.

Our office maintains resource materials that are available for students' reference. Pamphlets and brochures about various legal topics are available to enrolled Texas State students at no expense.

Because all Texas State students are considered potential clients, the Office of the Attorney for Students cannot advise students about disputes with another student due to a conflict of interest. You may wish to consider mediation, a service in which the parties in dispute meet with a neutral third party, a mediator. The mediation helps each side to recognize alternatives to the problem and to work together to find a solution amenable to both parties.  To request a mediator, visit the Human Resources office at Texas State.
